Neil woke up late on Christmas Day, unwrapped his presents with his family, then drove his younger sister to work. His life was cut tragically short after his car was involved in a head-on smash as he drove home.
He was a great laugh. He brought everyone to laughter all the time. He was always smiling and he could be cheeky and mischievous, but would not do anything to hurt anyone.
"He saw the lighter side of life. There was never a dull moment with him."
Neil, was caught up in the accident after driving his sister Gillian, 16, to Selby Golf Club, where she worked as a waitress.
After leaving the club his green Citroen Saxo collided with a red Transit Connect van in Barff Lane, Brayton, at 12.09pm.
He was cut from his car by firefighters and taken to York Hospital by ambulance. The three people in the van suffered minor injuries.
His mother Elaine, 45, said: "He was sleeping in and I was telling him to get up. We both offered to take his sister to the golf club, but he said he would do it because I had a friend at the house.
"When he had not returned we started trying to phone him and we could not get through. We heard there had been an accident and that the police had blocked the road. I said: `I need to know what car that is'."
Neil had started an apprenticeship a month ago and was about to be taken on full-time by Dunnington firm Coopers Electrical Services Ltd.
He was studying at York College after leaving Selby College and his part-time job in Selby's Somerfield store to follow his dreams of being an electrician.
"He was just getting older and growing up with his job, getting new experiences. He was just starting his life. He knew what he wanted to do and was just starting to focus."
The Manchester United and Hearts fan loved playing golf, skiing, music and socialising with his friends. He was saving his money for a holiday abroad with his friends next year.
He was due to celebrate his father's 50th birthday on Boxing Day with a trip to Wetherby racecourse along with family from around the country.
His parents said they will remember him as a bubbly teenager who was always his own man.
He died with his slippers on. We bought him some old-man slippers for an 18th birthday party and he wore them everywhere. He was shopping for Christmas presents with them on and he wore them to college for a laugh.
Neil, today was the first time Lewis had wanted to come with us to your christmas party! He talks about you all the time and has your picture in his bedroom, and even though Lily never met you she knows all about you because he has filled her in! Today i realised what a massive impact you had on Lewis, he has loads of happy memories and mostly laughs when he talks about you, today he told me he was proud to have had you as his best friend lol bless him! x
You are always in our thoughts, and not just at christmas time, we miss you, but know that where ever you are, youll be alright, and keeping a watchful eye!! x

Hi neil, Bruce here im just thinking of the times when we were younger that time i came down and we caught the frogs in the pond in the garden.Your dad sent me your CV i want to be an electrician as well, I will see you Neil not passes where i don't think of you , you are still here with i know it and say hi to grandma for me take care , im going to put a cheeky wee bet on for your birthday i know you would have. I love you sleep tight ,although i doubt it you couldn't sit still.
5 years on....
Nearly 5 years on...Yet it feels like only last christmas that you were taken from us...taken from all your friends and taken from all your family.
We all still miss and think of you every day...not that we have much choice around this time of year (you couldn't have picked a day with a bigger build up could you?!!)
The last birthday I saw you was on my 16th...and your little sister turns the big 21 tomorrow...Martins all finally moved out of the house and your best friend became a dad to a beautiful little girl last week! Its all gone so fast! ...But i dont know why I'm telling you all this... because i know you have been with us all for every birthday, every christmas, every party and every firework that dad has (very dangerously) lite for you!!
I hope as every christmas passes it be less of a difficult time and more of a celebration of your life...but for now i hope you can put on your old man slippers and come and keep that cheeky smile all around us this christmas!!
We love you always, Gretel! xxxxx
that time of year, again...
And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
will absolutely never forget you! got a box in my room full of stupid things you made me ha ha mainly inappropriate drawings and poems.. but there are some nice things too :) photos and videos.. my fave is probably you, mark and i doing our dance routine to bewitched ha or theres another of you beating me up while i tried to perform lion king. miss you so much. mum misses you almost as much as i do!! bet you miss her more though... ha
havent quite got round to getting my tattoo yet... dont know that i really want 'mr luva luva' on my forehead? wonder if you can get tattoos up there? and you have got 'i love hannah' (and then where your tshirt starts) 's mum' haha wouldnt suprise me, its the kind of daft thing you would do! but thats why i love you. you never failed to make everyone laugh... and you really didnt care what people thought, as long as you were having fun!
well i know im meant to say rest in peace, but i think you would absolutely hate to be in peace, so im going to say i hope you are having lots of fun... where ever you are...
keep smiling :)
To Neil, Sorry its late but Happy Birthday. I never met you but you seemed like a lovely person who always had a laugh and was never short of a smile. You have a truely wonderful family who I admire for the strength they show at times, and they certainly think the world of you.Keep on protecting and watching over them and I promise to look after your sister. I hope you enjoyed the baloons and fireworks they sent up.
All my love Terry xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
